When I was 13 years old I went to New York to train at the Times Square Boxing Club. It was owned by a guy named Jimmy Glen. He would become my trainer and manager for my entire boxing career.
Jimmy died with the COVID at NYU Medical. They said he was doing a lot better, everybody thought he was going to be ok. The next day he died. Really heartbreaking…that was a great loss.
In March Nina, who owns the gym where I am a trainer, walked in and said “We're closing”. I was like in shock, because I'd been working there for 17 years. Just the thought that I was not going to have this place to come every day. It was kind of unnerving to say the least.
I figured it would be short-lived but as the days have gone by it just seems more and more desperate.
I think I'm more worried about my son than anything else. He doesn't want to go outside. He stays in and plays music in his room. I like to tell him that this is a once in a lifetime of event, maybe not even once in a lifetime. It’s not normal and we are going to get through it and there's going to be a day after it.
